Scripture Union Daily Guide 24th February 2025 Outline:
The disciples were not accused of stealing. The Law in Deuteronomy 23:25 permits their action. What the Pharisees considered unlawful was reaping on the Sabbath. That transgressed the law of the Sabbath, as interpreted by them. They had replaced the spirit of the laws of Moses with detailed and endless rules and regulations, placing more value on the Sabbath than on feeding the hungry (Matthew 12:1) or healing the sick (Matthew 12:10).
This is legalism and it is ungodly and was a constant source of disagreement between them and Jesus. Are you sometimes legalistic like the Pharisees? What do you learn from Jesus’s reply in Matthew 12:3-8? Can you imagine what would happen if in today’s world, we shut down hospitals, police and fire stations or departments dealing with electricity and water on the Sabbath? Jesus Himself set us an example on the use of the day. See Matthew 12:11,13.
Note the attributes of the Servant (Matthew 12:18-20). Are these true of you or are you controlled by the spirit of jealousy and hatred?.
The purpose of the miracles of Jesus was to meet human needs and to fulfil the scriptures concerning Him. He was God’s chosen servant, the beloved of God, “… nations will put their trust in His name…” (Matthew 12:18-21; Isaiah 42:1-4). God gave Him a name that is above every name! See Philippians 2:9-11. Neither law nor rule of man could therefore hinder Him from fulfilling His divine mandate.

To God be the Glory
1. To God be the glory,
Great things He has done;
So loved He the world
That He gave us His Son,
Who yielded His life
An atonement for sin,
And opened the life gate
That all may go in.
Refrain
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the earth hear His voice!
Praise the Lord, praise the Lord,
Let the people rejoice!
O come to the Father,
Through Jesus the Son,
And give Him the glory,
Great things He has done.
2. O perfect redemption,
The purchase of blood,
To every believer
The promise of God;
The vilest offender
Who truly believes,
That moment from Jesus
A pardon receives.
Closing Prayer:
Lord, please free me from legalistic, self-righteous, ill-motivated actions.
