Who is “that man” as mentioned (v.7 NLT)? Many today, due to our evil deeds and intentions are “that man” (v.9). That man usually shows contempt for the LORD (v.14). What were the consequences of these on David (vs.10-12)? Spiritual leaders are to be courageous with skill and wisdom like Nathan (vs.1-4). His approach made David condemn his own action (vs.5-6) and confess his sins (v.13). But notice how furious he was thinking of drastic punishment on the offender not knowing he was the man. We are always hard and harsh on others when they sin.
Some people, like David, have demeaned, condemned, and criticized the weaknesses in friends, colleagues, family members, associates and students (vs.5-6). They see the deficiencies in others (Matthew 7:4-5). In condemning others, we often condemn ourselves. The consequences of sin are grievous (vs.10-14). They were fulfilled (2 Samuel 13:26-30; 15:13; 16:20-23; 12:18). After this incident, David poured out his heart to God (Psalms 51 & 32) in order to show the joy of being forgiven. Does God remove all the consequences of our wrongdoing when He forgives and restores us (vs.13-14)? The death of the child was not judgement on the child but on David for his sin.
