Scripture Union Daily Guide 27th April 2025 Outline

Land possession and distribution have posed a lot of challenges to many countries, communities and even among family members. Many times, it has resulted in litigation, fighting and killing and destruction of lives and properties. This is traceable to the fact that land, most of the time, is limited in supply while population is on the increase.

God instructed Moses that when they cross over to possess the land, they should first drive away the inhabitants of the land and destroy all their idols and then divide the land equitably by lot according to the population of each tribe (Numbers 33:54). Why do you think these instructions are necessary?

Notice what will happen to them if they fail to drive away the inhabitants of the land before them (Numbers 33:55-56). When we fail to totally exterminate sin or causes of sin in our lives, they soon become a source of irritation and temptation.

In Numbers 34, God did not only set the boundaries of the Promised Land, but personally chose by name, a person from each tribe to participate in the sharing of the land.

Promise Land
1. I fled from Egypt’s bondage,
I heard that help was near;
I cast my care on Jesus,
And He dispersed my fear:
I passed between the billows;
Walled up on every hand,
I trusted to my captain,
And sought the promised land.

Refrain
I am over, yes over
On Canaan’s shore I stand;
I am over, yes, over,
In the promised land.

2. I sang a song of triumph,
I shouted o’er and o’er;
And then pursued my journey,
For Canaan’s happy shore:
I came to Sinai’s mountain,
I trod the desert sand,
I drank at Horeb’s fountain,
Seeking the promised land.

3. The spies brought back their message,
Some wept, some said, We can;
The land was all ’twas promised,
But who would lead the van?
At last, my heart despairing,
Of entering with this band,
I cried aloud to Jesus,
To show the promised land.

4. Then, after weary marches,
And many a longing sigh,
I found the river crossing,
And saw the land was nigh:
The Lord looked down in mercy,
By faith I touched His hand,
I followed close beside Him,
And found the promised land.

5. And now my song of gladness
I’m singing day by day,
For fellowship with Jesus
Makes calm and bright my way;
I fear not for the morrow,
For His almighty hand
I know shall lead and keep me
In this, the promised land.

Closing Prayer:
Oh Lord, grant us the courage and wisdom to challenge the injustices in the distribution of resources in our communities and nations!
