Scripture Union Daily Guide 2nd April 2026 – Outline
Pilate seems to be asking the accusers of Jesus to testify against their own accusations. However, they were too blinded by their drive to get rid of Jesus. Notice Pilate’s conclusion in Luke 23:14. Herod’s conclusion agreed with Pilates’ but neither of them freed Jesus. These two were willing to pervert justice to maintain peace and keep their positions.
Notice Pilate’s appeal to them in Luke 23:16,20,22? They had made up their minds as to what they wanted. Compare this with some decisions made in some high-profile cases within our justice systems.
The religious leaders and the crowd prevailed on Pilate even when Pilate knew that there was no reason to sentence Jesus to death. Pilate was afraid of displeasing the emperor and the people.
Meanwhile, Herod was supposed to have known better because Jesus lived within his jurisdiction. Herod did not need the consent of the people to decide on the case before him. But the fears he entertained beclouded his thinking. This is a stark reminder that we need to be careful as we make decisions that affect people.

Calvary
1. On Calvr’y’s brow my Savior died,
’Twas there my Lord was crucified;
’Twas on the cross He bled for me,
And purchased there my pardon free.
Refrain
O Calvary! dark Calvary!
Where Jesus shed His blood for me;
O Calvary! blest Calvary!
’Twas there my Savior died for me.
2. ’Mid rending rocks and darkening skies,
My Savior bows His head and dies;
The opening veil reveals the way
To Heaven’s joys and endless day.
3. O Jesus, Lord, how can it be,
That Thou shouldst give Thy life for me,
To bear the cross and agony
In that dread hour on Calvary!
