There have been discussions and debates in every generation on the question, “when will Jesus come again?” Over the years, people have given all kinds of predictions concerning the date of Jesus’ second coming and they have all proved false. The fact is, we do not know the exact date when Jesus will come again. Jesus tells stories to illustrate the nature of His second coming. It is like servants waiting for the master who has gone to a wedding feast (vs.35‐38). It is like a robber who comes in the night unannounced (v.39).
The attitude of believers should be like a faithful House Manager who carries out his duties well, in the absence of his master (vs.42‐48). Like the servants in the story, we are to watch for the coming of Jesus all the time; 24/7. The Romans divide the night into four watches while the Jews divide it into three watches (v.38). We are to be ready and alert to open the door for Him at once when He comes (see Revelation 3:20). It is certain that Jesus will come again; but the time of His coming is unknown (v.40).
