Today’s Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 29 November 2022

In total contrast to his father Jotham and forefather, David, Ahaz did not do what was right in the eyes of the Lord. What did he do instead (see v.2‐4, 22‐25)? Let us explore the consequences of his actions. He and his people became captives to two kings: the king of Aram (Damascus) and the king of Israel. Notice the consequences of the king’s behaviour on the people of Judah, women, young boys and girls, soldiers and their commanders, as well as some members of the king’s family. (vs.5‐8).

Indeed, “righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34). Interestingly, the Israelites showed that they were more God fearing than Judah. When Oded warned the soldiers and the people of Israel against taking their ‘fellow Israelites’ prisoners, notice the action of the civic leaders (vs.12‐13). The soldiers went the extra mile and provided them with clothing, food, medicine, transport and protection (vs.14‐15). What a magnanimous and godly action. See 2 Kings 6:8‐23 for a similar show of generosity and the result.
