Scripture Union Daily Guide 30th August 2025 Outline
Job and his friends were on the same level until his trials began (Job 12:3). They all believed that God punishes sinners and prospers righteous people. They all lived the life he describes in Job 12:5. People who are at ease can easily blame those facing misfortune that it is their own fault. Now, Job knows differently. Sometimes, the sinners are the ones who live in comfort (Job 12:6). Even the beasts of the field and the birds in the air and the fish in the sea testify to the sovereignty of God in sustaining His creation (Job 12:7-10.). What is not common knowledge is that, deliberately, He sometimes overturns the order of things (e.g. Job 12:17-21); and no one can do anything about it (Job 12:14).
We have to face it: God is not easy to defend! We are too limited to understand why He allows many of the anomalies we see in the world. Why does the innocent suffer? We must not make the same mistake as Job’s friends. Their wrong answer was that it means they are not innocent because if they are innocent, they would not suffer!
