Scripture Union Daily Guide 7th April 2026 – Outline

The Rechabites were Nazarites, descended from Moses’ father-in-law (Judges 4:17, 1 Samuel 15:6 and 1 Chronicles 2:55). The Lord commended them for their obedience and self-denial. This instruction had been given to them by their ancestors for over three hundred years. Generations have come and gone but they have kept strictly to this tradition. Jeremiah did not command them in the name of the Lord because it was not a prophecy but an action to test their commitment to their tradition.

What are some of those Christian traditions held unto through many generations but against which we are rebelling these days? Contrary to the Rechabite’s life of discipline and obedience, notice Israel’s response to God’s command in Jeremiah 35:14-16. Their refusal to heed God’s repeated warnings against their idolatrous life, provoked Him; and He would visit them with calamity (Jeremiah 35:17).

Could there be any besetting sin in our lives of which we need to repent and from which we should move away (read Proverbs 29:1)? For their faithfulness, the Rechabites, originally ‘aliens to the commonwealth of Israel’ (Ephesians 2:12) were honoured by God with special service in His temple (Jeremiah 35:19).
