The Upper Room 24 March 2022 Devotional
I awoke with a feeling of dread. I was going to see our son in a nursing home for people with mental illness. The previous time my wife and I had visited was a disaster. Our son was combative, and his delusions were so strong that we weren’t able to connect with him.
Now I was preparing to visit again, and I felt strongly apprehensive. As I do every morning, I read The Upper Room before I left. The writer spoke of heavy burdens and how God had met her every need, providing strength and rest. Reflecting on her words, I prayed for God to give me peace, patience, and understanding for my upcoming visit. Immediately, I felt God’s precious love surrounding me.
When I arrived, our son met me with a smile and big hug. The visit was the most fulfilling in years. His delusions were minimal. We spent time recalling happy memories. I was able to hear his great big belly laugh. When it was time to leave, he gave me another big hug.
How do I explain the gift of this good visit? Was it just a coincidence? No! Our time together was an answer to prayer. Even in the midst of anxiety and difficult circumstances, God strengthens us with love and blesses us in unexpected, generous ways.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Loving God, help us always to put our trust in you when we are anxious. Thank you for giving us peace in our times of need and blessing us with moments of joy. Amen.
