THE UPPER ROOM 22 MAY 2022 DEVOTIONAL FOR SUNDAY
TODAY’S TOPIC: REMAINING OPEN

TODAY’S READING
Exodus 2:1-10
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
I will follow God’s plans for me, even when I don’t know where they will lead.
Every Wednesday at our men’s Bible study, my friend Gene used to greet me saying, “Hey, Pastor!” But I wasn’t a pastor, and I regularly reminded Gene that I didn’t want to be one.
However, a couple of years later I found myself enrolled in a seminary, where they trained students for full-time ministry. I told myself I was there to prepare for lay service in the church. I really wanted to return to the career I had before I entered seminary.
During my last semester of seminary I applied for 30 jobs, but received no offers. Then one night — the same day I had turned in my thesis for graduation — I received a phone call from a pastor. He had received my résumé from someone I had never met, and he wanted to hire me as an associate pastor at his church. I’ve worked there for four years now.
We often don’t know God’s plans for our lives. Just like Moses’ mother and sister watching him in that basket, we don’t know where God might take us or what God has planned for us to do. But when we remain open, we allow God to shape our lives in surprising ways.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear God, thank you for the plans you make for our lives. Keep our eyes, our ears, and our hearts open to hear and respond to your call. Amen.
PRAYER FOCUS
Those facing tough decisions
