Daily Devotional October 16, 2026: Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread

Today’s Scripture: Matthew 6:11

“Give us this day our daily bread.”

One Day at a Time

Jesus taught His disciples to pray for bread, not for a year’s supply. In a world of savings plans, rising prices and constant planning, this simple line brings us back to daily trust. God invites us to depend on Him today, and to trust Him again tomorrow.

What the Verse Teaches

God Cares About Ordinary Needs

Food, rent, school fees and transport are not too small for God. Jesus put daily needs inside the pattern of prayer.

Daily Dependence Builds Trust

When Israel gathered manna, they received enough for each day (Exodus 16:4). Daily provision keeps our hearts close to the Provider, not only to the provision.

“Us” and “Our” Include Others

Notice that Jesus did not say “give me my bread.” When we pray for “our” bread, we are reminded of neighbours who may have none, and that we may be part of God’s answer to someone else.

Reflection Questions

• Which need am I trying to carry alone instead of praying about?
• What has God supplied this week that I have not thanked Him for?
• Who near me may need help with something as basic as a meal?

Today’s Action Step

Pray the line “Give us this day our daily bread” slowly, then do one small thing for someone else’s table: share a meal, send a food gift or give to a trusted food charity.

Closing Prayer

Father, thank You for providing for me today. Teach me to trust You one day at a time, and make me open-handed toward those in need. Amen.
