Daily Devotional October 21, 2026: You Are the Light of the World
Today’s Scripture: Matthew 5:14-16
“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”
Light Is Needed Most Where It Is Dark
Midweek can feel dim. Workplaces are tense, news is heavy and some homes carry quiet struggles. Jesus does not tell His followers to hide until things improve. He says, “Ye are the light of the world.”
What the Passage Teaches
Light Is Who You Are, Not Only What You Do
Jesus says “ye are,” not “ye should try to be.” Because Christ lives in us, we already carry His light. Our job is to let it be seen.
Light Is Meant to Be Visible
No one lights a lamp and covers it. A hidden faith helps no one. This does not mean being loud. A steady, kind life is often the brightest witness.
Light Points to the Father
“That they may… glorify your Father.” The goal is not to be admired but to help others see God through ordinary good works: patience, honesty, generosity and gentleness.
Reflection Questions
- Where am I tempted to hide my faith or dim my light?
- Who in my daily life is walking through a dark season?
- What simple good work could point someone to God today?
Today’s Action Step
Choose one person at work, home or school and do one quiet, practical act of kindness for them. Ask God to let them see His love through it.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for making me a light in Your name. Help me to shine with kindness, honesty and courage today, so that others see You. Amen.
