Topic: Seeking The Best Solution
Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you sanctify my spirit, soul and body as I read your word in Jesus name.

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
Two challenges are presented in this passage: (i) how to get Jacob accept to release Benjamin to go with his brothers to Egypt, (ii) how to prove to Joseph that indeed the sons of Jacob are not spies as he had ‘thought’ or insisted. To the first challenge, Judah offered to guarantee the safe return of Benjamin. Interestingly, Judah was the one who had come up with the plan to sell Joseph (37:26‐27). Now he had to negotiate with his father to get Benjamin to see Joseph.
This probably points to a change of heart or maturity on the side of Judah. Jacob offered a ‘solution’ to the second challenge by advising his sons to take the best products of Canaan to the Governor as a gift. Apparently, the products that Jacob suggests were not available in Egypt (v.11 cf. 37:25). Do you think Jacob was trying to bribe Joseph, to find favour (the old schemer at work?), or to show appreciation?
Often, it is a thin line that separates the two. Note the hope and despair in his prayer (v.14). How often do we pray to God and at the same time, despair as Jacob did?
