Read and Meditate on Today’s  Scripture Union Daily Guide for Tuesday 21st June 2022. May the Lord bless you through His Word, Amen!

Topic: The Second Coming of Christ

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, expose me to your truth as I read your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: Luke 21:20‐38

Question(s) for Reflection
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
• Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

Besides the destruction of the temple, Jesus foretells the terrible havoc that should come upon the Jewish nation because of God’s vengeance in fulfilment of all the prophecies declared by Old Testament prophets (vs.20‐22). Note the warning Jesus gave in v.21 for their own safety. Gentile nations will be used by God as His rod of discipline until the times of the Gentiles are over (v.24).

Take note of the frightful signs that would precede the second coming of Christ (vs.25‐26). At His Coming, all eyes shall see Him from all nations around the world (v.27). Also see Matthew 24:30 and Mark 13:26. However, the Church of Christ, His bride will be “caught up to meet the Lord in the air”. This underscores the charge Jesus gives in vs.28,34 and 36.

This incidence is popularly referred to as RAPTURE (1 Corinthians 15:51‐52; 1 Thessalonians 4:15‐17). The reference to ‘this generation’ in v.32 is puzzling. However, it does not refer to Jesus’ Second Coming but to the destruction of Jerusalem which occurred in AD 70, just 40 years after Jesus spoke these words.
