Daily Guide 24th June 2022 | Scripture Union Outline

Esau returned from his hunting, prepared a sumptuous meal for his father, only to discover that Jacob had received the blessings by tricks, moments before his arrival (vs.30‐32). Notice Isaac’s reaction when he heard Esau (v.33). It was at this point that Isaac knew that he had been deceived by Rebekah and Jacob, but it was too late because the blessing was irrevocable. Esau also discovered that his brother had outsmarted him again (v.36).

Read vs.34 and 38 again. Why do you think Esau was crying? Regret may bring bitterness and untold tears but it may not eliminate the damage that had been done. Years earlier Esau had traded his birth right as firstborn for a bowl of pottage, without any remorse for his misdemeanour (25:29‐34). He was ignorant of the fact that our actions of today are like sowing seeds whose fruits we will reap in future (Hebrews 12:16&17).

In what ways do we also sell our birth right as believer in Christ? Let us beware of actions that can cause us to regret in future, especially in old age.

Practice/Word Application
Thought: Is it not strange that Isaac appeared not to have had any plan to bless Jacob (cf., 49:1‐28)?
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• Oh Lord, deliver me from actions that may cost me my blessings.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 6:2; 2 Chronicles 33, 34; Ecclesiastes 7
