SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 3RD AUGUST 2022 DEVOTIONAL
Topic: Revisit Your First Love
Opening Prayer: As I read through this passage dear Lord, let your word bring transformation to my life.
Scripture: Revelation 2:1‐7
Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any command for me to obey?
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?
• What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?
The first letter is addressed to the church in Ephesus, the wealthy capital city of Asia Minor. He tells them, “I know your deeds!” (v.2). The Lord certainly knows about His church, our struggles, and our way of life. Nothing is hidden from Him. The deeds of the church in Ephesus look enviable indeed, and the Lord commends them (vs.2, 3, 6). Jesus knows and acknowledges our good deeds.
Notice however, the major trespass the Lord holds against them and for which He reprimands them (v.4). Jesus said the first and greatest commandment is to “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37, 38). Of all virtues, “the greatest is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13). What makes us lose the passion with which we first enjoyed our newfound faith and love for the Lord?
Is it familiarity, compromise, pressures of life or sin? Whatever the reason, losing our first love for our Saviour hurts Him deeply. The Lord urges us to repent and do the things we used to do (v.5)? in worship and in obedience?all based on our genuine love for Him.
Practice/Word Application
And so? Reflect on your walk with the Lord. Have you lost your first love for Him? “Consider how far you have fallen (and) repent!” (v.5). Ask for forgiveness and the strength to retrace your steps back to your glowing days of zeal for Jesus.
