Scripture Union Daily Guide 14 February 2023 | Devotional

Do You Know That? Daily Guide Reading is published by Scripture Union Press & Books Ltd, an arm of Scripture Union Nigeria. Daily Guide is a true nondenominational, interdenominational Christian Bible engagement/reading aid – meditate on the Bible without denominational colorations. May the Lord bless you as you study!

Today’s Topic: Consecration

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray that you order my steps today through your word as I meditate on it.

Scripture: Exodus 13:1-16

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 3: Is there any command for me to obey?

Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 14 February 2023

When the Lord passed through the land and killed all the firstborn sons in Egypt, “from the firstborn of Pharaoh, who sat on the throne, to the firstborn of the prisoner, who was in the dungeon, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well” (Exodus 12:29), the firstborn among the Israelites were spared, hence, the declaration in v.2. To consecrate means to set apart or devote completely to God and His purposes.

Because the firstborn of the Egyptian animals also died, the dedication of the firstborn of Israel also included those of the animals. The rules for observing this command are given in vs.11-16. Note that parents had a responsibility to teach their children why they redeem the first born. If we do not teach the next generation the Word of God, the Church will die. All Christians today are to consecrate themselves to God (see Romans 12:1-2).

Notice the strict prohibition of yeast of leaven in the preparation of the meals for the celebration of the Passover. What are the lessons we learn from this (compare 1 Corinthians 5:7-8)? This feast was to remind the people that they were leaving the old life behind and entering into a new way of living. “Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness” (2 Timothy 2:19c).

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
Help me, heavenly Father, to turn away from wickedness and to teach the next generation about you.
