Why did calamity come upon the people who were once the beloved of God (Jeremiah 44:1-6)? Note that God in His lovingkindness did not leave them to continue in their backsliding. He sent His Prophets to warn them day and night (Jeremiah 44:4) but rather than repenting, they turned deaf ears to the prophets’ messages. If any man goes to hell, God is not to blame. When people reject God, and choose the way of wickedness, to please themselves, and to serve idols, they should be ready for the consequences of their choices.
Read Jeremiah 44:7-10 again and observe three questions God asked the people of Judah. God did not stop at reminding them of their past failures which brought disaster to them; he went further to give explicit warning about the consequences of persisting in idolatry, even in Egypt (Jeremiah 44:11-14). What does this teach us about God? God is compassionate and kind. He would not punish anyone without adequate warning and opportunity to repent. That is the reason Jesus came to the world (Matthew 1:21; John 3:17-18).
So what? How do you treat God’s word that comes to you in your personal studies, and through sermons, songs, etc.? Remember, you do not have forever to disobey God!

Thank you, Lord, for your love and compassion towards me, and for the warnings you always send to me. Help me to heed your warnings and turn away from my sin.

Pray for every child of God to desire to know God more intimately. Pray for desire to study, meditate and obey the word of God more. Pray that our testimony as God’s children will be more forceful and impactful.
