Scripture Union Daily Guide 1ST APRIL 2024 OUTLINE

The angels’ question, “Woman, why are you crying?” (v.13), repeated by Jesus (v.15) is highly instructive. Jesus had risen. It was time for rejoicing, not for mourning. Those who experience the risen Christ ought to rejoice.
Mary did not recognise Jesus when she saw Him (v.14), for excessive sorrow and worry can prevent us from recognising Christ with us in trouble—as it happened to Cleopas and his friend in Luke 24:13-35. How does Mary’s response (vs.14,15) shroud the power of the resurrection? We worship the living Saviour, not a god that can be carried about like an idol! When we seek Christ as Mary sought her Lord, may we find Him and recognise that it is He!

Earlier, Jesus called Mary, “Woman!”; now He mentions her name, “Mary!” (v.16). The Lord knows our names and calls us to respond to Him, declaring, “My Lord and my Saviour.” “I have seen the Lord,” Mary reported to the disciples. Today, how does a believer “see” the Lord? See Paul’s prayer for the Ephesians (Ephesians 1:18-20).
V.17 ascribes an assignment for Mary. What is the Lord’s assignment for us who have experienced His resurrection (Matthew 28:20)? Note Jesus’ reference to His disciples as “My brethren” and their relationship with Him and His Father in v.17. See also Hebrews 2:17; Luke 8: 21.

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
Lord, help me to seek you, for you alone have eternal life.
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Zephaniah 3:17
“The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.”
