Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 21 September 2023
The question of Christ’s resurrection is now resolved with the statement in v.20. The consequences of His glorious resurrection are amazing. Because He arose, we too shall arise. Note the comparison between Adam and Christ (vs.21-22); Adam represents death, while in Christ is life eternal (John 1:4). According to Romans 8:1, anyone who believes in Jesus Christ has his or her sins forgiven and translated from death to life. It is now for each to choose life or death. To choose Christ is to share in his eternal victory (vs.24-26).
Read vs.27 and 28 again and note that Christ is here not being painted as subject to God as a servant to his master. The subjection is simply a reference to “the saving ministry and function of Christ, not to His eternal person and being”.
The New Testament has no record of the practice of baptizing for the dead (v.29) in the early Church. Paul is here probably referring to a cultic culture of the Corinthians. In Africa, Paul might ask, “Why do you bury your elders with money and household goods if there is no life after death”? But that is not endorsing this practice as the Mormons (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints) claim.
