Scripture Union Daily Guide 22nd August 2026 Outline
Wow! Fire… cloud… thick darkness… loud voice. What an awesome scene when the Lord spoke (Deuteronomy 5:22-23)! The Law is given. God has nothing more to add. It’s now up to the people to respond. How do you appreciate their response (Deuteronomy 5:23-26)?
Ten commandments were enough to convince the Israelites that they were sinners who could not dwell and live in God’s holy presence. Notice their request to Moses and their promise in return (Deuteronomy 5:27). Today, we have a better intermediary, our Lord Jesus.
Observe the response of God in Deuteronomy 5:28,29. God is pleased with what He saw in Israel, but how He longs for Israel to keep the same attitude of heart. The Lord looks to the heart. What is God’s motive in calling Israel to obey? The good of His people is deep in God’s heart. Every commandment of God is rooted in love for His people; it is not intended to control or to harm them. God’s commandments are given to protect His people.
A path is marked out from which the Israelites must not stray ‘to the right or to the left’ (Deuteronomy 5:32-33). How quickly today, we have strayed from the path of obedience in pursuit of our sinful desires!

In what ways have you strayed from God’s path? Confess these and ask the Lord to grant you the heart that truly seeks after Him and obeys His word.
