Scripture Union Daily Guide 24 August 2024: The Lord Fought For Israel

Daily Guide Devotional For Today 24th August 2024 (Saturday)

TOPIC: THE LORD FOUGHT FOR ISRAEL
OPENING PRAYER: Plant my steps in the sure promises of your word today, dear Lord.
SCRIPTURE: JOSHUA 10:22-43

Question(s) for Reflection
* Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 24 August 2024 Outline:

The way Joshua dealt with the defeated kings (vs.23-27) was according to the directions of God (Deuteronomy 7:2). The humiliation of these kings was not just physical or political; God was judging the spiritual forces and idolatry that were behind the kings and their governments. Joshua cannot, therefore, be accused of being barbaric. He was only executing God’s judgment on the nations. He was playing the role of the current day executioner or hangman.

Encouraged by the victory over the five kings who were hidden in the cave of Makkedah, Joshua led his forces farther into the Southern region and conquered city after city in the foothill (vs.28-35) and in the Negev desert, including Hebron and Debir (vs.36-39).

The conquest reached as far south as Kadesh-Barnea and as far west as Gaza (vs.40-43). Joshua, though very old and faced with a big task, achieved God’s purpose because he trusted in the Lord, the One who fights for Israel (v.42; Numbers 14:6-9).

Practice/Word Application
So what? The Canaanites were people loved by God like you and me, but they sinned, and God destroyed them. If we too continue in sin, we will suffer its consequence. We cannot afford to continue to live in rebellion.

* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
Lord, help me to know that there is no task too big that you cannot accomplish.

Prayer for the week
* Pray for those who have backslidded, that God will restore them in mercy • Pray that they will remember where they have fallen, and in humility return to God • Pray for grace for brethren to show love, visit and pray for them, to bring them back to the fold.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 22:19
“But be not thou far from me, O LORD: O my strength, haste thee to help me.”
