Scripture Union Daily Guide 26th February 2025 Outline
God can give signs to people to strengthen their faith (Judges 6:36-40 and 2 Kings 20:8-11). But the Scribes and the Pharisees had a different motive when they asked Jesus for signs. They wanted to be entertained rather than earnestly seek signs that could change their way of thinking. If they attributed the signs they had seen to Beelzebub (Matthew 12:24), of what use was another sign?
Miracles, of themselves, cannot guarantee belief and repentance. The greatest miracle that ever took place, the sign of Jonah (Matthew 12:39-40), is the death and resurrection of Jesus. Even that has not changed the reaction of those who have closed their minds against God.
In Matthew 12:43-45, Jesus throws light on the importance of being filled with the Spirit and John 6:63 tells us that the Word is “full of the Spirit”. As we noted yesterday, we need the Word and the Spirit to distinguish God’s work from that of Satan’s. A ‘Wordless’ Christian is a potential prey for Satan. Make sure you fill your heart with the Word of God.
Jesus redefined the larger family unit (Matthew 12:46-50). Mark 3:21 and John 7:5 tell us what Jesus’ immediate family initially thought about Him. If their intention here was to take Him away, that would explain Jesus’ reaction. Thank God, they soon came to the knowledge of the truth and became true brothers of Jesus (Acts 15:13, Jude 1:1).
* Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
Closing Prayer:
O God, strengthen my faith by what I read, hear, see, and experience.
