Scripture Union Daily Guide 29th June 2020 – Assurance of Eternal Life
TODAY’S TOPIC: ASSURANCE OF ETERNAL LIFE
Opening Prayer: Sanctify my life dear Lord as I study your word in Jesus name.
Scripture: 1 John 5: 13–21, NKJV
13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, [a]and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
Confidence and Compassion in Prayer
14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.
Knowing the True—Rejecting the False
18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps[b] [c]himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.
19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.
20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
Reflection
• Is there any promise for me to believe or hope for?
Today’s Outline: Scripture Union Daily Guide 29th June 2020
Some people think that we can never be sure of our salvation while on this earth. How does this compare with v.13? This gives us the confidence we need to pray “according to his will” (vv.14,15). Do you personally have this assurance and confidence? What is the one condition that needs to be fulfilled? What responsibility do we have towards a brother or sister who falls into sin?
Unfortunately, instead of praying and loving, many of us gossip and ridicule such fellow Christian. There is a great revelation here: God can use our earnest prayer to restore such a believer fully. The phrase “sin that leads to death”: can be seen from two angles. If spiritual death, it may refer to those who follow the doctrines of the devil and so persistently deny Jesus’ full deity and full incarnation (vv.19,20).
If physical death, it may refer to God’s judgment on believers who continue to persist in sin. See 1 Corinthians 5:1–5, 11–13. John concludes his letter with three basic Christian truths, stating them as matters of fact.
Read the following verses and fill in the blanks. v.18 – “we know, __ ___” v.19 – “we know,_ ___” v.20 – “we know, __ _____”
