The joy of every parent is to see their baby grow steadily from infancy to adulthood. Where growth is not visible after a few months, it can lead to serious anxiety. What evidences of spiritual immaturity in the life of the Jewish Christians are outlined in this passage? See 5:12-13 and 6:1-2.
The Jewish Christians got stuck in old traditions and basic Christian doctrines such that they could not understand advanced teachings such as the priesthood of Christ. How true is this of our churches which today are full of “Spiritual babies” – people who are still sucking “milk” when they should be cracking spiritual “bones”.
Such are people who depend solely on what their pastors say and who can hardly stand in the face of difficulties in the marketplace. What are the signs of spiritual maturity (5:14; cf. 1 Corinthians 3:1-3)? Check Paul’s advice in 1 Corinthians 14:20. Skill in the use of God’s Word comes as we learn to apply this principle to all of life. We must by faith familiarise ourselves with the truth in God’s Word. We must accept and apply all to ourselves with appropriate actions. Read Heb. 6: 4-8 again.
Let us pay heed to the warning against apostasy. How does the author describe the apostates? The believer turning back to a life of sin and disobedience breaks the heart of Christ. Let us also note what Peter says about this issue in 2 Pet. 2: 20 –22.

Closing Prayer: O Lord, help me to daily feed on your word and live by its truth.
