Scripture Union Daily Guide 6 May 2024 OUTLINE
The first call in today’s reading is to awake (vs.17). We must not allow fear to overwhelm us but be secured in God. His love sets us free, so we need not live as people under God’s judgment. Judah suffered condemnation for a while, “God gave her the cup of His wrath to drink.” She was down because God had struck her. But now, she receives the good news. The cup has been taken from her and given to her enemies. She is forgiven just as we today have been forgiven in Christ. Sadly, Judah was still labouring under a sense of condemnation, hence Isaiah’s declaration in 52:2.
The second call to awake in 52:1-6 is from a sense of utter worthlessness. Zion had been so defiled, enslaved, oppressed, and mocked, that they felt as nothing. But she still rightfully belonged to the Lord. So those who have devastated her will pay for the wrong they have done. We believers should rejoice because we are still loved and valued by God. In what way can we maintain our sense of worth as we live each day?
In 52:11-12, the climax is reached. Zion is to keep alert because her salvation is near. She is to live, expecting the Lord at any moment. That was their experience in Egypt and in exile before Cyrus’ intervention. We too, in a similar manner, should live each day expecting the coming of our Lord Jesus. How can this be practically done?
Practice/Word Application
