Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th August 2025 Outline:

Take another look at Matthew 21:5. Zechariah the prophet wrote it some 500 years before Jesus Christ was born (Zechariah 9:9). Those words remained quietly in the records for centuries, awaiting their time of fulfilment. Meanwhile, the whole religious establishment of Israel were waiting expectantly. They knew that God had promised them a Deliverer. When King Herod asked them where the Messiah would be born, they had no doubt that it would be in Bethlehem in Judea (Matthew 2:6). They had their own idea of the sort of Deliverer they wanted and what He should do for them.

The country was under Roman rule; and they wanted freedom from King Herod and his Roman masters. Dislodging the world’s only superpower from your country would require superior military capabilities. Appearance, they say, is a letter of recommendation. A dramatic entrance on a war horse at the head of columns of chariots would be a good place to start. Now, Jesus Christ burst onto the scene, on the back of a baby donkey, accompanied by a mixed crowd with leaves and palm branches shouting Hosanna! Quite clearly, God’s ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9).

Adoration
“Ride on, ride on in majesty! In lowly pomp ride on to die.”
