Thanksgiving Family Devotional: A 10-Minute Table Devotion With Bible Verses and Questions

Thanksgiving gatherings are a perfect time to pause and turn hearts toward God together. This short devotion works for Canadian Thanksgiving today, American Thanksgiving next month, harvest celebrations in the UK and family dinners in Nigeria or anywhere else. It takes about ten minutes and suits all ages.

Before You Begin

Choose one person to lead, ask another to read the Scripture, and keep the mood warm and relaxed. No preparation is needed.

Step 1: Open With a Short Prayer (1 minute)

Lord, thank You for this food and for the people around this table. Open our hearts as we remember Your goodness. Amen.

Step 2: Read the Story (3 minutes)

Read Luke 17:11-19, the story of the ten lepers. Ten were healed, but only one returned to say thank you.

“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God.” (Luke 17:15, KJV)

The Point

Receiving a blessing is wonderful. Going back to thank the Giver is better.

Step 3: Talk Together (4 minutes)

Choose two or three questions:

  • What is one thing God did for our family this year?
  • Who is someone who helped you recently, and how could we thank them?
  • Why do you think nine of the ten did not come back?
  • What is something small that we often forget to be thankful for?
  • What is one thing you are asking God to do in the coming year?

Step 4: A Simple Activity for Children (1 minute)

Give each child a small card or paper leaf. Ask them to write or draw one thing they are thankful for, then place it in a bowl in the centre of the table. Read a few aloud at the end of the meal.

Step 5: Close in Prayer (1 minute)

Invite each person to say one sentence of thanks aloud. Then pray together:

Father, thank You for every blessing we named today and for those we forgot. Make us a thankful family. Help us to share what we have with those in need. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Bible Verses to Display on Your Table

  • “O give thanks unto the LORD; for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever.” (Psalm 107:1)
  • “Be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” (Psalm 100:4)
  • “When thou hast eaten and art full, then thou shalt bless the LORD thy God.” (Deuteronomy 8:10)

For Families Who Find This Season Difficult

If this year has brought loss, strain or an empty chair at the table, keep the devotion short and gentle. Gratitude can be small and honest, and it does not require a perfect celebration.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I do a family devotion with young children?

Keep it short, use a story, include a simple activity and let children speak. A few minutes done warmly is better than a long session.

Which Bible passages work for Thanksgiving?

Psalm 100, Psalm 107, Psalm 136, Luke 17:11-19 and 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 are popular and easy to read aloud.
