God provides the balance I need.
The Upper Room Devotional For 27th December 2022
Jesus said, “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint, dill, and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. It is these you ought to have practiced without neglecting the others.” – Matthew 23:23 (NRSV)
When my husband was a child, his elderly neighbor owned a Model A Ford. Every so often, Mr. Reeves would take his car for a test drive. One part of his test was to drive a short way, then slam on the brakes. He would get out and check the skid marks to see which brake was catching unevenly. Finally he would slide under the car and use his wrench to make adjustments to the identified brake. He repeated the process until the brakes were balanced.
With so much pressing on us today, we can get out of balance just as those brakes did. Family, church, work, and community all demand our attention. Without realizing it, we may begin to devote more time to one area while neglecting others. How do we find balance?
When I feel pulled in a thousand different directions, I focus on my balance point: God, who set the universe in motion. God alone can help me find the equilibrium I need. Taking time to pray and to read my Bible equips me with wisdom to adjust my priorities.
Seeking God’s priorities first will help me balance each day.
TODAY’S PRAYER
Dear Father, when our lives seem out of balance, turn us toward you and your wisdom. Amen.
