“Rejoice in the Lord alway: and again I say, Rejoice.” (Philippians 4:4, KJV)

Meaning of the Verse

Paul repeats himself for emphasis: rejoice. He wrote this letter while imprisoned, so the joy he describes does not depend on comfort or ease.

“Rejoice in the Lord”

Our joy is anchored in who God is, not in how the day is going. Circumstances change, but the Lord does not.

“Alway”

“Always” includes difficult days. This is not pretending to be happy. It is choosing to remember God’s goodness, even through tears.

“And again I say, Rejoice”

The repetition shows that Paul knew this would not be easy. Joy is something we return to again and again.

Context

Philippians 4 continues with a call to prayer instead of anxiety (verses 6-7). Joy, prayer and peace are linked: as we rejoice and pray, God’s peace guards our hearts.
