When God means to bless you, sometimes your store houses become too small. Abram and Lot’s wealth greatly increased as they followed God in their lives. Their pastures could no longer sustain their livestock so there was strive between the herders. How did Abram solve the problem? Why did he not take first choice as father?
Humility and not insistence on positions and privileges proved the quickest way out of the logjam. Abram was the uncle, the richer and more powerful but he allowed Lot first choice. Look at his main reason for choosing this way of solving their problem (v.8). Relationships are usually expensive to maintain. Would you rather lose in order to maintain relationships? Some people have said it is weakness but the sages teach us, ‘to stoop is to conquer’.
How would you have handled this challenge? When people insist on their rights, conflicts thrive or persist. Such strife in our families and churches tends to tear us apart. We should rather pursue peace and make necessary sacrifices in our relationship with people (see 1 Corinthians 6:7). God rewarded Abram’s sacrifice by blessing him beyond his imagination (vs.14–18). We stand to lose nothing when we decide to make sacrifices for peace.
