Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 6th December 2023

The visitors from Babylon were not from a friendly nation. There was nothing wrong with the visit and reception accorded the Babylonians. However, Hezekiah proudly showed them all his riches, and God was not pleased. It is a thing of joy to receive God’s blessings, but you do not have to show off or publicize it, bringing glory only to self. Thus, Hezekiah was unwise and undiscerning showing all the nation’s riches (blessings amassed over many generations) to the enemy.

Perhaps, Hezekiah was carried away with God’s deliverance (in Isaiah 38) that he let his guard down. When we experience God’s deliverance, blessing or breakthrough, our focus should be expressing deep gratitude to God and not seeking for attention from men, glorifying self. We must ascribe all blessings to God. Read 1 Chronicles 16:11-12 and 1 Corinthians 4:7.

Hezekiah’s response to the prophet was very disappointing for a king and in stark contrast to his reaction in Isaiah 38:1-3. He thought only of his reign – just like many leaders (corporate and political) in our world today. Whatever we do, we should be concerned about its effect on future generations.

Practice/Word Application
