Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 1 February 2023
Jesus is interested in both our mission to the foreigners and those in our familiar places. He had been away and been in contact with many people in Gadarene, and other regions around the Sea of Galilee. He now came to His own hometown of Nazareth (v.1). One good example to follow was His association with His home synagogue on the Sabbath (v.2). He was involved in the life of His home ‘church’ as a teacher, and a minister who was always willing to help people in need (v.5).
One evil of familiarity is that it breeds contempt. The people in His hometown were offended by Him because of their deep knowledge of His family background and kins (vs.2-3). To prove that Jesus was truly human, Mark lists the names of His brothers and sister (v.3). What did the people lose or gain in return for their contempt and unbelief? (Read vs.5,6). Observe the instructions for all soulwinners as found in vs.7-11; the enduement with power to do the work as the Master did (v.7), the obedience of those disciples to the Master’s orders (vs.12-13), and the results (v.13). How does going out in pairs enhance the disciple’s ministry (v.7)?
