Scripture Union Daily Guide 12 September 2026 Outline
Some of the pagan signs of mourning are listed in Deuteronomy 14:1,3. Even in our modern times, some of these are still practised. Can you mention some of the other ways by which people identify with the departed in the various African cultures today? The motivations to be different are in Deuteronomy 14:1-2. Read them again. When we, as Christians, are denied involvement in unholy practices, this should bring joy to our hearts instead of a sense of loss.
It should be noted that these food laws were initially meant for the people of Israel. God wanted them to be distinct from other nations on earth. However, when the Gospel breaks down the separation between Israel and the Gentiles, all foods are declared clean (Mark 7:19; 1 Timothy 4:1-5).
Read Deuteronomy 14:4-8 again and observe that the clean animals met the two criteria of chewing the cud and having cloven hoof. If only one of the criteria is met, the animal is unclean. We live in a world that believes that everything is relative. However, as Christians, this passage is to remind us that there are absolutes. We belong to the living God who requires our total devotion to Him.
And So:
Reflect on 1 Peter 1:13-15 and ask the Lord for the grace to be different and pattern yourself solely after Christ
