Scripture Union Daily Guide 16 June 2024: Playing By God’s Rules

Daily Guide Devotional For Today 16th June 2024 (Sunday)

TOPIC: PLAYING BY GOD’S RULES
OPENING PRAYER: Plant my steps in the sure promises of your word today, dear Lord.
SCRIPTURE: 2 CORINTHIANS 10:12-18

Question(s) for Reflection
* Q2: Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?

Scripture Union Daily Guide 16 June 2024 Outline:

Observe how Paul exposes the folly of those who have been discrediting his apostleship. First, and as we saw yesterday, their aim is to make Paul appear as an ‘outsider’ (v.7). Secondly, they are in the habit of ‘commending themselves’ (v.12). Thirdly, they make themselves the standard of achievement, comparing themselves with themselves (v.12). This is what they boast about.

In so doing, pride and self-conceit creep in. Contrast this with Paul’s standard (v.13). What case is Paul making in vs.14-16? He cites Jeremiah 9:23-24 (v.17) to remind his detractors that one should glory in the Lord. Indeed, the Corinthians are the exhibit of Paul and his companion’s ministry among them. No matter how much someone boasts about their achievements, it is the Lord who commends.

Have you witnessed how some Christian leaders preach to those who are already converted, or plant churches where there are existing ones? How does such undermine or catalyse the spread of the Gospel? Note how Paul runs in his own lane and keeps away from others (vs.13-16) but he is not a lone ranger either (1 Corinthians 3:6; Colossians 1:7, 4:7). Paul’s main purpose is to lead non-Jews to faith in God, not to be popular.

Glory and Grace in the Person of Christ
1. Now to the Lord a noble song!
Awake, my soul, awake, my tongue,
Hosanna to th’Eternal Name,
And all His boundless love proclaim.

2. See where it shines in Jesus’ face,
The brightest image of His grace;
God, in the person of His Son,
Has all His mightiest works outdone.

3. Grace! ‘tis a sweet, a charming theme;
My thoughts rejoice at Jesus’ name!
Ye angels, dwell upon the sound;
Ye heav’ns, reflect it to the ground.

4 O may I reach the happy place,
Where He unveils His lovely face;
His beauties there may I behold,
And sing His name to harps of gold. Amen.

Closing Prayer
Grant Lord, that you may be able to say of me, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalms 17:6
“I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.”
