Scripture Union Daily Guide 16th August 2026 Outline
Israel is moving closer towards the Jordan river and drawing nearer the Promised Land. But here comes the enemy! King Og is one of the remaining giants about 12 feet tall (Deuteronomy 3:11) and his 60 cities have highly fortified walls with gates and bars (Deuteronomy 3:5).
Observe how the Lord first encourages and reassures Moses (Deuteronomy 3:2). Do you need some encouragement now? Hear the Lord say to you, “Do not be afraid…” God promises to give Israel the same victory as He did against the Amorites (Deuteronomy 3:2-3).
The fortified cities had seemed impregnable to unbelieving Israel. And so were those giants who had frightened them? Notice now the shouts of victory: “we struck them down… we took all his cities…we completely destroyed them… we took all…” as Og, king of Bashan, is delivered with all his people into Israel’s hands, as was Sihon before him.
With this new conquest, Israel has more territory to occupy on the eastern side of the Jordan. This land is allocated to the tribes of Reuben and Gad after their request (Numbers 32:1-5,33) as well as to the half-tribe of Manasseh. Why doesn’t Moses allow them to settle down in their newly won territory (Deuteronomy 3:18-20)?
