Scripture Union Daily Guide 1st May 2026 – Outline

The Philistines were a sworn enemy of Judah but at this time, it seems they had formed an alliance against Babylon, a common enemy. However, Philistia will be destroyed alongside Judah by Babylon, God’s instrument of judgement.

Read vs. 2–5 again and take note of the overwhelming and distressing nature of God’s judgement. V.2 is a picture of the invading Babylonian army, who would overrun and destroy Philistia together with their allies, Tyre and Sidon (v.4; cf. Amos 1:6–8; Zephaniah 2:4–5). V.3 sounds like the experience of people in some parts of Africa, where wars have continued unabated for years.

Imagine a situation where parents are so distressed and exhausted that they are unable to help their children. When God’s judgement is unleashed, no human efforts or courage can help to bear it (v.5b; Hebrews 10:31). Only God’s mercy will avail (Isaiah 64:4). What can we learn from Jeremiah in v.6?

We should feel pity and intercede for God’s mercy on people who are suffering. God does not judge because He wants to, He judges because He has to (v.7).

And so? Never think of God as weak or soft because of His love. Our God is a consuming fire!
Prayer: Pray that God will be merciful to us and give us succour from sufferings we have brought upon ourselves because of our sins.
