Today’s Topic: Daily Dependence on God

Opening Prayer: Make my life oh Lord a reflection of you as I study your word.

Scripture: Exodus 16:17-36

Question(s) for Reflection
• Q 5: Is there any warning for me to heed?
• Q 7: What truth is God revealing to me in this passage?

Outline For Scripture Union Daily Guide 20 February 2023

Manna was a provision from heaven. It is not a result of the Israelites’ labour. No planting, no weeding. All they needed to do each day was to go and collect it. It was always made available by God. Notice however, the simple instructions related to the gathering of the manna for each day (vs.16,19) and for the Sabbath day (vs.22-23, 25-26). However, some people thought they have better ideas and will not obey these instructions. Disobedience has consequences. Notice the consequence in vs.17-18, 20 & 27.

The instructions and the consequence of disobedience shows the importance of dependence solely on God. This is reflected in the Lord’s prayer, ‘give us each day our daily bread’, not the bread for tomorrow or next week. The Lord “who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all—how will he not also, along with Him, graciously give us all things” (Romans 8:32)? The Israelites needed to trust God to feed them in the desert. We too must trust Him for our daily needs.

This miraculous manna was provided throughout their forty years journey in the desert (v.35) and the sample kept as a memorial did not rot (vs.32-34).

Practice/Word Application
And So: Worship the Lord with this song:
Jehovah Jireh, my provider
His grace is sufficient for me
My God shall supply all my needs According to His riches in glory…. (Merla Watson)
