Scripture Union Daily Guide 22nd July 2024 Outline:

God sets out the rules on the types of animals that will be acceptable for sacrifice. The rules are the same for both Jews and the foreigners living among them (vs.18, 25). From vs.19-22, identify the types and qualities of animals that are acceptable for offerings. Notice the exception in v.23. God declares four times from vs.30-33: I am the Lord. This underscores His relationship with the Israelites. The Lord is holy and has made His people holy to serve Him in holiness.

For this reason, the greatest care was to be taken in the selection of animals for sacrifice because sacrifices were either an expression of praise to God for His goodness, or else they were the designed means of asking for or retaining God’s favour. No animal that was not perfect could be a fitting sacrifice for such purposes because it was being presented to a holy God (vs.21-25).

Animals with defects were not acceptable as sacrifices because they did not represent God’s holy nature. Furthermore, the animal had to be without blemish to foreshadow the perfect, sinless life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ (John 1:29; Hebrews 4:15).

Practice/Word Application
And so? All Christians as spiritual Israelites are required to worship and serve God in holiness (see Romans 12:1-2; John 4:23-24).
