Scripture Union Daily Guide 2nd March 2026 || Outline

The Pharisee who hosted Jesus to a meal was amazed that Jesus did not perform “the hand-washing ceremony required by the Jewish custom” before eating (Luke 11:38). Read Luke 11:39-44 again. Imagine that Jesus was saying this to our Church leaders today! What can we learn from this?

Jesus’ response revealed that God is more interested in the condition of our hearts than external conformity to man-made laws and regulations which only breed religious hypocrites. Jesus outlined some manifestations of religious hypocrisy – self-justification (Luke 11:42), self-exaltation (Luke 11:43) and a life of deception (Luke 11:44).

How does this manifest in our cultures and churches today? True Christianity is not about “dos” and “don’ts” but about following and obeying Christ genuinely and whole-heartedly (cf: Matthew 15:10,19,20; John 4:24). “Men judge by outward appearance, but God looks at a man’s thoughts and intentions” (1 Samuel 16:7b). People, including respected church leaders, can put up a show of holiness but with rotten hearts.

Read Luke 11:45,52,53 again, how do you see the reactions of the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law to Jesus’s rebuke? When you are confronted with the truth of God’s word, how do you react?
