Scripture Union Daily Guide 3 October 2026 Outline

There are important statements about the administration of justice in our reading today demonstrating the fact that our God is a God of justice.

(a) Investigation (Deuteronomy 17:4) “Everyone is innocent until proved guilty.” Do the authorities in your country uphold this principle, never precondemning their opponents? Does the court of public opinion not usually prejudge a government official accused of fraud just because others in such positions are usually guilty?

(b) Witnesses (Deuteronomy 17:6-7) Have you ever experienced the harm that false witnesses can cause to innocent people? That is why more than one witness provides a little more safeguard, at least.

(c) Appeals (Deuteronomy 17:8-9) Even the best judge can sometimes get it wrong. Appeals can sometimes make things right; dedicated servants of God were the ones involved in Israel (Deuteronomy 17:9). Sadly, our lawyers often focus more on legal technicalities than on the truth.

(d) Respecting the verdict (Deuteronomy 17:10-12) Among us, those in authority sometimes ignore court judgments that are not in their favour. In Israel, this was not allowed to happen.

Compare Deuteronomy 17:14-20 with 1 Samuel 8:4-18. Note all the warnings God gave concerning the
(a) choice and
(b) lifestyle of their king.

What is their significance? Israel’s kings contravened all the warnings and Israel suffered for it. What about our present leaders of Church and State?
