Scripture Union Daily Guide 30th May 2026 Outline
The sons of Zeruiah had always wanted Abner dead for killing Asahel, their brother. Asahel died in an act of war because of his lack of discipline. But his brothers hated Abner for it. Joab killed Abner. The fact that David negotiated with Abner when Joab was away could have created panic in Joab fearing that Abner would become the Commander of the combined army. Whatever the reason, the murder of Abner was despicable, an act of vengeance perpetrated by wicked people (2 Samuel 3:34).
Observe David’s innocence, actions and response to Joab’s acts in 2 Samuel 3:26b,28,29,31-39. By his godly disposition and graceful acts, David averted the threats posed by Joab’s callous acts that could have truncated the fledgling and fragile peace-building process for the unification of the kingdom. What is difficult to understand is why David did not punish Joab.
Was David trying to avoid creating another fighting front as he begins to spread his authority over all Israel? It is common in our societies to see selective application of the law and disregard of constitutional rules by leaders. Sadly, this is also now creeping into the church.
