Scripture Union Daily Guide 4 January 2026 Outline
The story of Jesus’ temptation by the devil began with His being filled with the Holy Spirit. As believers, we should not only seek to be full of the Holy Spirit, but also to be led by Him in all our endeavours. As important as it is for every believer to be filled with the Holy Spirit and be led by Him for him to be victorious over Satan’s assaults, we should note that it will not prevent the devil from tempting us (Galatians 5:16-17; James 1:13-14).
Read Luke 4:3,6-7 and Luke 4:9-10 again. Observe Satan’s focus on each occasion as he tempted Jesus. Though the methods and circumstances may be different, Satan’s focus has remained the same, to tempt us in the three areas of the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eye and the pride of life (compare Genesis 3:6 and 1 John 2:16).
Read Luke 4:4,8,12 again and take note of the role of the written word of God as Jesus’ main tool for countering Satan’s suggestions. If we must overcome Satan’s temptations, we must also have a good knowledge of the word of God as recorded in the Bible. We need an unwavering commitment to live by the truth of God’s word for victory over Satan.

YIELD NOT TO TEMPTATION
1.Yield not to tempÂtaÂtion,
For yieldÂing is sin;
Each vicÂtoÂry will help you
Some othÂer to win;
Fight manÂfulÂly onÂward,
Dark pasÂsions subÂdue,
Look evÂer to JeÂsus,
He’ll carÂry you through.
Refrain
Ask the SavÂior to help you,
Comfort, strengthÂen and keep you;
He is willÂing to aid you,
He will carÂry you through.
2.Shun evÂil comÂpanÂions,
Bad langÂuage disÂdain,
God’s name hold in revÂerÂence,
Nor take it in vain;
Be thoughtÂful and earÂnest,
Kindhearted and true,
Look evÂer to JeÂsus,
He’ll carÂry you through.
3.To him that o’erÂcomÂeth,
God givÂeth a crown;
Through faith we shall conÂquer,
Though oftÂen cast down;
He who is our SavÂior
Our strength will reÂnew;
Look evÂer to JeÂsus,
He’ll carÂry you through.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, help me to always overcome Satan’s temptations just as you did.
