Introduction to
Introduction to Zechariah
Introduction: Zechariah was both a priest and a prophet to the Jews living in Palestine after their exile in Babylonia. A contemporary of the Prophet Haggai, he assisted him in the campaign to finish rebuilding the Temple.
Zechariah explains that Israel was exiled for its sinful practices, but God Himself will eventually transform His people and introduce a new era of holiness throughout the whole Earth. The message of holiness stands out in the closing verses of Zechariah 14:20-21.
The book emphasizes the importance of God’s Covenant people living ethical lives (Zechariah 7). The consequences of unfaithfulness to God’s covenant law were so real. Yet, the unfaithfulness of the fathers did not condemn the present generation to live under God’s curse. If they responded in repentance and faith, they would find God turning to them in blessing.
Zechariah was both a priest and a prophet, delivering true messages from God (Zechariah 1:1). But are all priests and prophets, then and now, true messengers of God? (See Jeremiah 23:16-18,21-22).
God’s call to His people is clear: “Return to me” (Zechariah 1:3). True repentance requires a complete turnaround—turning away from sin and self-centeredness towards God in loyalty and obedience to His covenant. Without repentance, there can be no true spiritual renewal or revival. Notice the instruction in Zechariah 1:4. What warning is there for us in Zechariah 1:5?
Israel’s exile was a direct result of their stubborn disobedience. Every warning from God’s prophets about the consequences of sin came to pass (Zechariah 1:6). Yet, in Zechariah’s first vision, God expresses deep concern for His covenant people (Zechariah 1:7-15) and promises restoration (Zechariah 1:16-17). Read Zechariah 1:14,16-17 again. How does this reveal God’s heart?
Zechariah repeatedly asks, “What are these, my Lord?” (Zechariah 1:9,19). The four horns symbolise oppressive powers, but God will overthrow them through the four craftsmen and bring an end to their power and authority (Zechariah 1:18-21). No power can stand against God’s authority.
