Scripture Union Daily Guide 9th February 2021 Today – A Critical Spirit And Unbelief

This is Scripture Union Daily Guide Devotional for Today Tuesday 9th February 2021. Receive Light and Insights as you read on.

TOPIC: A CRITICAL SPIRIT AND UNBELIEF

OPENING PRAYER: May my heart, O Lord, be receptive to your word as I meditate on it.

SCRIPTURE: Matthew 11:16-24 – 16 “To what can I compare this generation? They are like children sitting in the marketplaces and calling out to others: 17 “?‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not mourn., 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, ‘He has a demon.,19The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners., But wisdom is proved right by her deeds.” 20Then Jesus began to denounce the towns in which most of his miracles had been performed, because they did not repent. 21″Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.23 And you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades. For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Sodom, it would have remained to this day.24 But I tell you that it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

Question(s) for Reflection:
• Is there any warning for me to heed?
• Is there any other Biblical passage that can help me understand this passage better?

TODAY’S OUTLINE: SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 9TH FEBRUARY 2021

Whereas critical thinking, just like meditation, is a vital process in understanding scripture in order to take a good decision, critical spirit opposes anything positive. Which of these is on display by the Jews in vs.16-19? To what did it lead them. Do you find it difficult to accept spiritual truth without first being overcritical and finding trivial fault in the message or the preacher?

Read 2 Kings 7:1,2, 17-20 and see the sad end of the army officer who was so critical of God’s message through prophet Elisha. Bethsaida, Capernaum and Chorazin were cities where Jesus spent His life and time preaching and teaching. Also, He invested His spiritual resources and authority there performing various miracles, yet they did not repent.

Notice the consequence of their refusal to repent (vs.21, 24). Like these cities, God has made and is still making investments into our lives. The only useful return on these investments is our repentance and surrender to Him. Otherwise, we risk reaping the same consequence (see Luke 13:6-9).

Practice/Word Application:
• Thought: “A man who remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed without remedy” (Proverbs 29:1).
• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer:
• Pray for grace to walk peacefully with the Lord daily, no matter the circumstances.
• Pray for the Church to spend money in a way that will best honour God.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with Psalm 140:1-4
1.Rescue me, O LORD, from evil men. Protect me from men of violence,
2. who devise evil in their hearts and stir up war all day long.
3. They sharpen their tongues like snakes; the venom of vipers is on their lips.
4. Guard me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked. Keep me safe from men of violence who scheme to make me stumble.

Bible In One Year: Isa. 45-46; Mark 11:19-33
