Note the reason for which David inquired of the Lord (v.1). To whom do you turn when you want to take important decision? Read vv.4b–7 again. What can we learn from David’s message to the people of Jabesh–Gilead for burying King Saul? Leadership is successive; when one leader dies or leaves office, it is expected that another one would assume office naturally.
However, leadership succession in many nations, particularly in African Nations and even the church, is not always smooth. What did you notice in vv.8─11? How similar is this to the leadership tussles that we see in many of our churches and nations today? Vv.12─17 are an example of the effect of disunity in a nation, with each faction claiming territory for themselves.
Abner probably suggested this contest with the hope of winning and thus stop David’s army from further advance into Saul’s territory. We cannot forget the crisis in Nigeria (Civil war), Liberia, Rwanda, Sudan, Kenya, etc, as a result of leadership tussle. The aftermaths of these wars had left devastating effects on Africa. We must determine never to allow this to repeat itself.
⁂ Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?
