Jesus Christ utters an explosive statement in v.23. And when combined with the fact that the camel will more readily enter through the eye of a needle than a rich man entering the kingdom of God, it becomes a serious issue. But we know Abraham was very rich and so also was king David. Yet, they walked well with God. Is Jesus saying the rich will not enter the kingdom of God? Wealth has the tendency of making people feel independent of God, become materialistic and self-sufficient.
Love for riches can be a minefield for believers, but not the riches per se (1 Timothy 6:9,10). Notice the disciples’ astonishment in v.25 and the clarification which Jesus gave in v.26. The bare fact is that without God, salvation is impossible. Thank God for making it possible by giving us His only Son as Saviour. Notice again the disciples’ concern (v.27) and the benefits that accrue to them and anyone who opts to follow the Lord Jesus (vs.28-30).
We can expect our rewards of material things, in greater measures, only if we have willingly forsaken or forfeited them for the sake of Christ. What is the most important of the rewards?
