SCRIPTURE UNION DAILY GUIDE 21ST JULY 2022 DEVOTIONAL

Topic: Do Not Be Jealous of Your Brother

Opening Prayer: Dear Lord, grant me understanding and illumination as I ponder on your word in Jesus name.

Scripture: Genesis 37:12‐36

Question(s) for Reflection
• Is there any example for me to follow or not to follow?
• Is there any warning for me to heed?

Note Joseph’s obedience and his diligence (vs.14‐17). Shepherds often go to distant locations or jungles for days (even weeks), finding pasture for their animals. This is risky (wild animals, hostile neighbours, and cattle rustlers). Joseph did not give up and return home when he did not find his brothers in Shechem. Rather he continued toward Dothan.

Shechem was about 50 miles from the valley of Hebron where Jacob’s home was, and Dothan was another fifteen miles away. On seeing Joseph approaching, notice what his brothers decided to do (v.18) and why (vs.19‐20)? Reuben did not fully agree with the conspiracy and offered another suggestion (vs.21‐22). Why do you think Reuben tried to save Joseph? Joseph was later thrown into a well and eventually sold as a slave.

Note that to gain advantage over his brother, someone once used goat’s skin to deceive his father. Now, his favourite son’s robe is covered with goats’ blood to deceive him (vs.31‐33). Hatred, deceit and lies always bring sorrow (vs.34‐35).

Practice/Word Application
So: Jealousy if unchecked grows and leads to grievous sin(s).

• Any new insight or reinforcement of what you already know?

Closing Prayer
• “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me”.

Offer a prayer of faith in line with
John 14:13; Jonah 1‐4
