Scripture Union Daily Guide 22 October 2026 Outline

‘Your head cannot but shake whenever you are walking’, an African adage. God, in His sovereignty, knew that Israel would break the covenant and be taken into exile. Built into the law, therefore, was a mechanism for repentance and renewal (Deuteronomy 30:1 ff, cf. Isaiah 55:7). God’s arms are ever opened to receive the repentant sinner. Whatever depth we have reached, He forgives and restores us to Himself. Moses assured his people of God’s constant presence with them (Deuteronomy 30:3-6).

God’s promise to the patriarchs to give their descendants the Promised Land remains sure. He promises to change their hearts, replacing their spiritual insensitivity and stubborn heart to that which readily obeys the Lord. See Deuteronomy 30:6 for the reason. What an expression of love! Notice what becomes of their enemies in Deuteronomy 30:7. The curses that had fallen on Israel because of their disobedience will be put on the nations that “hate and persecute (them)”.

Today, God’s word is even closer to us (Deuteronomy 30:11-14). We have the Bible. We can read and meditate on it each day to receive God’s direction. In addition, we have God’s Spirit who enlightens our hearts to understand His word and gives power to act on it (the heart of flesh). The fruit of obedience is life in abundance, but rejection leads to death and destruction.
