Scripture Union Daily Guide 31st May 2026 – Outline
Notice the effect of Abner’s death on both Ish-Bosheth and on all Israel, and why (2 Samuel 4:1). We must never pin our hope on any human however powerful but on God alone (see Jeremiah 17:5). We have here another sad story of people who so love rewards and recognition to the point of losing their thinking capacities. These sons of Rimmon completely misread David’s character.
They thought David would want to kill all Saul’s sons so that nobody would challenge him to the throne. They knew that Saul was after David’s life but missed the fact that twice, Saul came within his reach, but David did not kill him. That would have made them understand David’s character. Worse still, they were officers in Ish-Bosheth’s army, so this was treachery of the highest order. They betrayed their country by killing their leader. Leaders need to be wary of characters like Racab and Baanah and safeguard their administrations from the activities and influence of such people.
And So
Put not your trust in man and do not attempt to fight for God.
Closing Prayer
Reflect on the situation described in 2 Samuel 4:8 and then pray.
Prayer of Faith
Offer a prayer of faith in line with Isaiah 26:3
